STEP 1 Prep Base

Most outdoor applications will require some form of base prep including vegetation removal, earth removal or existing hardscape materials.  Proper preparation of a smooth and compacted aggregate base & slope to allow water drainage away from any buildings or structures is very important for the integrity of the PAVERTURF system. Our base preparation methods utilize national building standards, but you should always check with your local building department or research any local contractor recommendations for your geographical area, which may vary.

Simply clear the surface where your PaverTurf will be placed by removing 3" to 6" of earth. Or, if you have enough elevation rise, skip the removal but make sure to kill or clear any grass or weeds. Level & compact area prior to adding the new aggregate material. Next, add a 3" to 6" inch layer of Patio/Paver Base or 1/4" Minus Rock - Crushed Aggregate, (NOT Sand). For increased drainage, a modified base layer of 3" to 5" of a larger road base rock (3/4" minus rock) as the main course followed by a 1" layer of finer 1/4" minus rock or similar (stone dust/concrete screenings), will provide additional drainage and may be a better sub base plan for areas with extreme freeze/thaw ranges.

TIP: You may want to top-dress the surface with 1 inch of stone dust / granite dust, or concrete screenings in order to have a smoother top surface so it is easier to set the pavers. Any large size rocks in the top surface can make it harder to level the pavers.

Spread evenly to achieve the desired finish height, shape and contour. Dampen the entire area then compact again until firm and smooth with a hand tamper or plate compactor. Keeping in mind the pavers and turf will add up to .75" to 1.75" to the finished height. Remember to slightly pitch (Min 1% slope) the area away from any buildings or structures, if applicable. On any open sides, It's always a good idea to use edging or a landscape border material to frame out the area to prevent wash out. Or, make sure to expand the base material past the desired finished area a minimum of 6" to 12" with a gradual taper.

PAVERTURF should not create any new water or drainage issues, but will not solve any, either. Any water or drainage issues should be addressed prior to installation.

Approximate # of Bags Per 4' x 8' PaverTurf (32 SF)

(5.5) 50# Bags Paver Base = 1"

(11) 50# Bags Paver Base = 2"

(16) 50# Bags Paver Base = 3"

(22) 50# Bags Paver Base = 4"

Buying base material by the yard is 5-6 times cheaper, if you have access to a truck, trailer or delivery.  1 cubic yard = 54 bags
